Churches of Ghent

2014

Karin Borghouts has photographed 46 churches in Ghent (B); a commissioned assignment of STAM, citymuseum Ghent, BE. Solo exhibition in the abbey church of STAM.
Churches are very iconic. They give structure to a city and dominates the skyline. Church attendance is declining dramatically, and the churches are therefore often empty. The question arises whether there is potential in giving these buildings another function. Ghent 46 parish churches, one more famous than the other, which have been depicted by photographer Karin Borghouts. In the abbey church of STAM the photos offer an opportunity to think about the future of church buildings. Examples of redevelopment and plans serve as source of inspiration for this exercise. Book available in Dutch.
