Fierensblokken Antwerp

The Fierens blocks on the corner of Nationalestraat and Kronenburgstraat in Antwerp Belgium have almost been demolished. After years of intensive renovation and refurbishment, the social housing complex designed by Gustave Fierens in 1937 is back with a wide range of affordable rental apartments. A new corner tower and a spacious roof terrace offer views over the city. The new owner, AG Vespa (the real estate organisation of the City of Antwerp), awarded the renovation contract to HCVA - Happel Cornelisse Verhoeven Architects and Molenaar & Co Architects after a competition. This is the ninth building project that Karin has photographed for HCVA.

A Painter's House

The photo book A Painter's House portrays the house of the painter Marten Melsen (1870-1947). Born in Brussels, he decided around 1900 to live in the countryside in Stabroek and to depict rural life. After his death, his wife Jeanne Goossens and later his unmarried daughters kept the house as it was. Their father's studio was preserved. This makes it one of the few remaining original artist's houses in Belgium. The simple interiors, which some people remember from their (great) grandparents, inspired Karin Borghouts to take a series of atmospheric and detailed photographs.
A Painter's House is the second in a new series of personal photography books about remarkable interiors. The House (2021) is the first book in this series, and the third is forthcoming. Order online.
