Exhibition The House

'On 13 March 2012, the house where the photographer Karin Borghouts’ parents lived was almost entirely consumed by fire. Before she could even think about cleaning it up, she did the best thing she could have done. As a tribute to the place where she had spent her youth, she picked up her camera and walked into the house.

The photos Borghouts made then became the exhibition ‘The House’. We see books on a shelf, candlesticks, a collection of oil lamps, mirrors, bathrobes in the wardrobe – everything is covered in a layer of grey dust that gives the objects an aura of surrealism, with an unmade bed as the tragic climax.

Almost every trace of colour has leached from the objects; only a fragment of Van Gogh in its banal frame is still putting up a fight. The pages are draped in mourning black that flows over the edges.'
Eric Min, ‘Mourning Black’, The House, 2021 (translation Helen White)

Vincent was here in Antwerp

The photographer Karin Borghouts followed in Vincent van Goghs footsteps, from his Dutch birthplace in Zundert to Auvers-sur-Oise in France where he took his own life. She has also reconstructed many of his still lifes and photographed them. Vincent was here is a visual investigation exploring the boundary between photography and painting.
The exhibition Vincent was here is different every time and will soon be on show in Rossaert, gallery and art book shop. This time the emphasis is on still lifes: from dark Brabant still lifes in clair obscur to exuberantly coloured bouquets and still lifes from Vincent's time in the South of France.

Vincent was here is part of the AntwerpPhoto Festival which takes place in the nearby Pilotage Building (opposite the MAS). From there, a walk has been mapped out to photo galleries and FOMU in Antwerp.

The photography book Vincent was here is a publication of Ronny Van de Velde and available in Rossaert, in the AntwerpPhoto Shop or online.
